In the dining room area Joy chose a beautiful wallpaper but the door was not in keeping with the style so i suggested instead of painting the door with gloss,we could cover the door with the same paper which creates a lovely flow of pattern and a unique way of covering a boring door.

The rest of the walls were painted in a light green which was colour matched from the wallpaper. The paint was carried on through to the kitchen to merge the two spaces together.

We also chose the large pistachio coloured flowers to colour match the paint for the basin stand.

Much more trendy for an up-beat hair salon.

Sometimes, one feature sets the theme for the whole room. With this bathroom, it was the detailing around the wash-hand basin that inspired me to create an art deco room.

We laid a black and white checked floor, and carried the monochrome theme across the curtains and accessories to complement the buttery yellow walls. I designed and used a stencil to add some detailing, adding a little glitter to the black paint to bring some glamour to what is usually the most boring room in most people’s homes.

For the same reason, we included some pictures, an antique mirror and a cut-glass door handle which all add a bit of sparkle and give getting ready in the morning some classic Hollywood charm.

This tall thin staircase required a lot of ladders and steady balance, but I’m really pleased with the results.

I love the arts and crafts style wallpaper, but in a space like this it would have been too much to cover the whole walls, so I used it to highlight some features, like the gorgeous alcove half way up the stairs. There were two separate decorating schemes for the different floors before, but by keeping the same theme we’ve really created a sense of flow and light. Gorgeous.

Bringing light into a space can make such a difference. It’s not so much the “wow factor” as the “aaah factor”.

If you’re not blessed with a south-facing room with great big windows, don’t worry. There are lots of little things you can do to make your home feel lighter, brighter and more spacious.

1. Use light, bright colours
Lighter colours will reflect light around the room. White is great, but there are lots of other light, bright colours that can give the same effect without the coldness of white.

2. Make the most of natural light
If the room has windows, let the light shine through. Avoid heavy curtains- light blinds and muslin curtains can allow most of the light through and let you keep your privacy. If you don’t have any windows, consider putting a glass-panelled door to allow light to flow through from other rooms.

3. Look at your lighting
You don’t have to spend a fortune on lights and lamps. The general rule is to have white or pale shade that diffuse light.

4. Make your furniture disappear
Furniture can block out the light and make a room seem darker. Lighter wood, or better still, glass furniture reflects more light and takes up less space in you mind’s eye. Try painting existing furniture for a quick fix.
